The Phoenix Rising Music Program, founded by Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter and former American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi, is an organization designed to be an expressive arts therapy program that encourages young adults to use music as a means to achieve greater self-awareness and understanding. Many of the participants are considered at risk youths and The Phoenix Rising Music Program has been proven to increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety and depression, and aid the recovery process for young people who struggle with substance abuse and/or co-occurring mental health problems.
“Our students work together to write, perform and record powerful songs of personal struggle and recovery,” says John Morabito, Music Director at Phoenix House in Los Angeles. When John originally reached out to Focusrite Novation about getting involved with the program, we knew the cause was important and the mission a bold declaration in improving the health and happiness of America’s young adults.
Focusrite Novation has donated a Scarlett 2i2, Launchpad, and Impulse 25 to The Phoenix Rising Music Program’s brand new recording studio based in Orange County, California. “The Scarlett 2i2 is a fantastic tool to allow these teens to verbalize their struggles and assist in their healing process.”
Two of The Phoenix House Academy’s graduate teens, with powerful stories about their experience in drug treatment, were awarded the top distinction in the MusiCares® and GRAMMY Foundation's® Teen Substance Abuse Awareness through Music Contest.
"I had no idea that recovery could link to music, and immediately felt like I had a huge reason to stay here and work on myself. I was really inspired by the other residents’ music, and it was so moving that these kids my age were speaking their own truths,” says a Phoenix House resident named Vera, age 18.
Focusrite Novation hopes our contribution to The Phoenix Rising Music Program will make a positive impact on every individual involved. Every young person should be so fortunate as to be able to seek music as a source of comfort, inspiration, and growth.
